Our neuroses II

All the things I typically carry on my person at any time has its own pocket. Wallet in the right front pants pocket. Coins, keys and cell phone in the left front pants pocket. Hard case for my glasses in right jacket pocket. iPod, writing utensils, and various other gadgets in my jacket breast pocket. My back pants pockets and left jacket pocket are typically unoccupied, though I occasionally use the latter to store trash but cannot throw it away immediately.

So I was in Eureka shopping and I drove home, and as I got out of my car, I noticed my right front pocket was not sufficiently lumpy. I started panicking and considering where I might have left my wallet, but as I scanned my other pockets, I found it out of place in my right jacket pocket - I must have put it in there when I pulled out my glasses for the drive home. I cursed myself for making such a dumb mistake and put it in its proper pocket for the walk out of the parking lot.

However, when I get home, I usually dump the contents of my pocket on my TV table, the kitchen counter, the couch - whatever surface is convenient when I decide to do so.

Now that I think about it, I used to be obsessive about counting the number of letters in signs I could see while riding in a car. I’d count the number of letters to see if they made an odd or even number in total, also doing the process individually for vowels. I can’t even remember the last time I did that, but I suspect it has something to do with learning to drive and then driving fairly regularly being involved in breaking the habit. Driving became an activity where I have to focus on the road, so no time for counting random crap on the street, I guess?

When I want a Mountain Dew, I take a can from the 36-pack (via Costco) and put it on the shelf on the inside of the door. I then take the other can that’s already there on the inside of the door and move it to the top rack. I then take the other can that’s on the top rack and drink it up. That way, I can always be sure my caffeinated sugarwater is at optimal chilled temperature, even if I have two in fairly rapid succession.
